The Bird and Monkey Show @ Fitzsu Society

This Fitzsu Society event was built around having a little fun. Inspired by our customers continued request for the little wooden monkey from Denmark and the glass birds from Finland, to objects we sold only by special order, Fitzsu decided to bring them in full time and in style. With assistance from Rosendahl and Iittala the store was decked out with over 50 monkeys and the complete available line of Toikka birds. The event was a smashing success and both items are now regulars at Fitzsu Society.

The monkey with the prankster's look and the light coloured belly, has transformed kids' rooms into jungles and sparked dreams of far-away places since 1951. On Danish television it has a permanent place as a mascot in wildlife programs, and as a prize in quiz shows. "Even though an old proverb says 'too much special knowledge makes you stupid' I, as a craftsman, must say that having gone through an apprenticeship in the field of applied art, gives me certain advantages in the difficult art of design, as compared to those who partly or completely work from theoretical knowledge. "Kay Bojesen was a silversmith, but through his wooden toys he became known as one of Danish applied art's great pioneers.
Birds have been a source of inspiration to Oiva Toikka for 30 years. The birds are made individually by hand. The special features of the birds can be created with special techniques such as filigree - a demanding job requiring an expert's touch. Professor Oiva Toikka is one of the greatest names in Finnish glass. His imaginative, rich and bold glass art deviates from the streamlined aesthetic of Nordic design. He has worked in the performing arts for as long as he has in glass. Perhaps the world of opera, theatre and ballet has contributed to his glass works, and vice versa. iittala's Bird by Toikka Collection is Toikka's best-known work. He has international career and he has received numerous awards.
