The Vipp story begins one spring Sunday in 1931 when 17-year-old Holger Nielsen wins a car in a lottery at the local football stadium. Holger loves cars but has no driving license, and he therefore decides to sell the car and invest in a metal lathe. This marks the beginning of Holger’s metal factory, where, in 1939, just after he marries Marie Axelsen, he will design and make the Vipp pedal bin which will become famous around the world. When Marie, a trained hairdresser, decided to open a hair salon, she asked Holger to furnish it including a garbage bin. A few days later, the Vipp can was born to Marie’s delight. Marie’s customers were wives of doctors and dentists who found the bin’s sturdy and practical design perfect for their husbands’ practices. Consequently, the Vipp trash can became a permanent feature of Danish clinics and found its way into the market place.
“Good design never goes out of fashion”, Holger used to say. Time has proven him right; the Vipp bin has only been marginally improved since 1939. Today the bin is internationally recognized as a design classic, and in November 2009 it was accepted into the architecture and design collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Currently, Morten Bo Jensen is the creative mind behind the new Vipp products, bringing the 70 year old company into the future. “Functionality and a distinctive idiom based on high quality materials and special manufacturing processes are the pillars of Vipp DNA and represents the common thread between past, present and future products,” explains Morten Bo, “But our aim is also to develop products, which are better than what's already available on the market. It is not just about developing something that is new or different, for that reason alone…We combine elements like these with our distinctive designs and materials that together and express a VIPP product with a strong DNA. So, Vipp DNA involves both concrete forms and materials but also on clear positions".
Vipp products are functional, unique and keep a very high quality and finish. That is why Vipp products have very long life cycles. The most popular of products is the Vipp pedal trash can. The Vipp 24 makes an excellent kitchen waste bin and the Vipp 16 has become a popular odorless diaper pail. Vipp began developing products beyond trash cans that now include bath and kitchen accessories, towels, hardware and even a kitchen. Fitzsu is an Authorized Dealer of Vipp trash cans and Vipp accessories and has sold Vipp products since they came to the U.S. Fitz and Su use Vipp products in just about every room of their house.
