Materials used: Part of a 3-d computer print out, like a Z-crop machine, it is imagined that the car should be made from the same materials as the Playsam Streamliner Classic Car. The Fitzsu Grand Prix Car, designed by Nader Tehrani and Office dA, draws from the essential strengths of the Streamliner Classic Car – its parts, its geometry, and its materials – but also expands on the portfolio by introducing a paradigmatic shift in its use and didactic function. If the classic car challenges and engages the child’s ability to roll it around, imagine the act of driving, and internalize that experience, our project has been to expand the child’s engagement by imaging this as a project of construction and re-assembly. The car is construed as a three dimensional puzzle, and the two base pieces that form the body of the car can be held together – conceptually and literally—by the driver, who acts as a kind of keystone. Without a driver, the car cannot be driven, as the two halves of the car are left to dismantle. The various parts of the car are painted in Playsam’s classic colors, suggesting that many different cars can be mixed and matched together in a variety of adaptations, rendering the color choices as part of the intellectual play. In collaboration with Monica Ponce de Leon, Tehrani established Office dA in 1991. As a principal of Office dA, Tehrani has received eight Progressive Architecture Awards, the Harleston Parker Medal, and the Academy Award for Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He has exhibited the work of Office dA for the Fabrications Exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art (NYC), the WTC proposal for the Venice Biennale and more recently for the Intricacy Exhibit in the Philadelphia ICA. The built works of Office dA include the Tongxian Art Center, the RISD Library, the NEU Spiritual Life Center, and the Macallen Building. Most recently, Office dA has won the New Shooting Club Competition in Kuwait, a multi-purpose project outside of Kuwait City. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design (1986), and a Masters of Architecture and Urban Design from the Harvard Graduate School of Design (1991). Since 1998, he has taught at Harvard University, Graduate School of Design, and has held the 2005 Distinguished Ventulett Chair at the Georgia Institute of Technology, the research of which is on exhibit through 1997.
